When a design calls for a small-signal bipolar device, the choice usually comes down to an NPN transistor or its PNP complement. Buying them as a matched pair looks simple until lead-free plating, gain groupings and package pitches start to differ between the two lines. Haiben, founded in Shenzhen in 2013, supplies a stocked selection of BJTs, digital transistors, composites and MOSFETs, including the Weforsemi line made by our wholly-owned subsidiary. This page explains how the pair behaves electrically, what to compare on the datasheets, and which stocked parts suit common purchasing routes.

NPN and PNP: what actually differs

Both device types are three-terminal BJTs with two PN junctions, and both are current-controlled. The difference is the layer stack. An NPN transistor is two N regions sandwiching a thin P base; a PNP is two P regions around an N base. In circuit terms this flips the polarity of every quantity: emitter current flows out of the emitter for an NPN and into it for a PNP, base-emitter turn-on is about +0.7 V against about −0.7 V, and the collector sits above the emitter for NPN while it sits below for PNP. In a complementary output stage or a push-pull driver, the two halves therefore share topology but not signal polarity, and their bias networks must be inverted to match.

Reading the pair as one specification problem

Purchasing staff and hardware engineers may be looking at the same board and asking different questions. The engineer checks VCEO, continuous collector current, transition frequency and output capacitance; the buyer checks package, reel size and whether both halves exist as stocked lines. Treating the pair as one problem means reading three columns side by side: absolute maximum ratings, DC current gain (hFE) at the intended collector current, and package thermal resistance. A gain band that is adequate for a switching task can be marginal for an amplifier stage, particularly where the bias point drifts with temperature.

Published hFE figures are usually quoted at a single collector current, so check the curve, not just the headline number. Sustained collector current, power dissipation and ambient temperature should also be checked together, because the package heat path often limits the pair rather than the die. Where the two halves of a design sit in different drive paths, it is acceptable for the NPN transistor and the PNP device to use different package families, provided board layout allows the change.

The stocked NPN and PNP types

Our stocked bipolar range covers TO-92, SOT-23 and SOT-523 formats, so through-hole and surface-mount routes are both served. Procurement teams comparing footprints across vendors can check the 2N3904 / 2N3906 cross reference before amending a bill of materials.

Pre-biased families are also stocked. VC143ZEF is an NPN digital transistor in SOT-523, and VC143ZME is an NPN digital transistor in SOT-723 rated at 150 mW. Because these devices integrate the base resistor network in the package, they remove two external resistors per channel; more detail sits on the digital transistors page. The catalogue also carries a Darlington Transistors / Composite Transistors category, including VC5853DCJ, a MOSFET-Schottky composite transistor in DFNWB3x2-8L with Vrrm 20 V, and VCMNT32D, a PNP power transistor with N-MOSFET in DFNWB2x2-6L noted for ultra-low collector-emitter saturation voltage and high DC current gain. If you would rather browse by family, the transistors hub lists every stocked category.

Pinout and gain-group checks before substitution

Pin assignment is the first trap in any swap. SOT-23 pinouts are widely standardised but not universal, and SOT-523 and SOT-723 land patterns are smaller still, so verify the emitter, base and collector positions on each datasheet rather than assuming the pair mirrors itself. Our MOSFETs follow the same discipline: VC9320A-1 in SOT-723 is rated VDS 20 V, ID 1.0 A, with RDS(ON) 160 mOhm typ at VGS 4.5 V and 180 mOhm typ at 2.5 V, and ESD capability of 3 kV HBM. VCAA3134KLC in SOT-883 uses a high-density trench cell design for low on-resistance, with RDS(ON) below 250 mOhm at 4.5 V and below 350 mOhm at 2.5 V. The gain group or hFE suffix must match the original design intent, because a lower-ranked group can reduce the margin on a driver stage.

Frequently asked questions

Can I substitute an NPN transistor for a PNP in an existing design?

Not directly. The two conduct in opposite polarities, so emitter, collector and base voltages change sign. Replacing one with the other requires reworking the bias network and confirming that the surrounding circuit tolerates the inverted current direction.

How do I choose between a standard BJT and a digital transistor?

Use a digital transistor when the base resistor network is fixed and board area is tight; the internal resistors are set by the part, so gain and switching speed cannot be tuned externally. Choose a discrete BJT when the bias point must be adjustable.

Which parameters should I compare first when pairing an NPN and PNP?

Start with VCEO, continuous collector current, package thermal resistance and the hFE band at your operating collector current. Confirm pinout and package land pattern before releasing the pair to production.
